One of the most original and versatile cellists active today, Sergei Suvorov was born in Moscow in 1984 into a musical family. He first began studying piano at the age of 6 and then took up the cello at the age of 7. After studies with Alexey Seleznev and Tatyana Guldan he entered the Gnessin School of Music to study with renowed Russian teacher Vera Birina for two more years before leaving for London in 1999. In London Sergei studied with prof. Stefan Popov at the Purcell School of Music and then at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. In 2005 he went to Germany to study with prof. Young-Chang Cho at the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen. Apart from that Sergei attended masterclasses of many great musicians such as Daniil Shafran, Boris Pergamenshikov and Steven Isserlis.
Sergei’s career as a concert cellist started at the age of eight. Since then he performed at various venues in Europe, Asia and North America. He worked with conductors Alexander Rudin, Lin Tao, Yuri Simonov, Eugeny Bushkov, Krzysztof Penderecki, Antonio Pirolli among others. He is also a keen chamber musician, counting Alexander Rudin, Leonid Gorokhov, Alena Baeva, Nikolay Lugansky, Elena Tarasova, Alexey Kurbatov and Pavel Nersesyan among his partners.
Sergei has won the Liezen International Cello Competition in 1994, the Moscow Cello Competition in 1996, the Guilhermina Suggia Award in years 2000 and 2001, the Karl Davidov Cello Competition in Latvia in 2010.
Sergei has worked with such contemporary composers as Alexey Kurbatov, Alexey Retinsky, Tikhon Hrennikov Jr. The pianist and composer Alexey Chernov dedicated his sonata for cello and piano to Sergei.
Sergei has given masterclasses to young musicians in summer schools in Vladivostok and Kaliningrad. He also appeared as a teacher in Yuri Bashmet’s Academy in Samara.
Sergei constantly expands the cello repertoire with his own transcriptions. Among Ysaye’s sonata no.3 for violin solo and Glazunov’s violin concerto. His repertoire also includes Shostakovich’s viola sonata and Penderecki’s viola concerto (which he had a chance to perform with the author at the helm).
Following Russian invasion of Ukraine, Sergei Suvorov has left Russia and now resides in Montenegro.
